Duo Espanas Charmed Guests of Lund's Series

On January 12, 2012 Julane presented Duo Espanas as a part of her concert series at the Art Sanctuary in Martinsville, Indiana. Despite the first blustery, snowy evening of the season, a large number of people braved slippery roads and came to hear the duo play.

Duo Espanas is comprised of classical guitarists Atanas Tzvetkov, from Bulgaria, and Espen Jensen, from Norway.   The two have doctoral degrees in guitar performance from Indiana University and have firmly established themselves as classical guitarists in the state of Indiana, and far beyond.  Their repertoire builds bridges between popular, traditional, and classical music, and is known for the range of expressions and display of guitar technique.

During the concert Espen gave some basic background information about their music in addition to providing programs that listed the compositions that they played.  The duo gave a musical tour of world areas far from Indiana.  Performing melodies from places like Argentina, Spain, Brazil, and Cuba, they transported listeners to warmer climates on an otherwise chilly Indiana night.  Their hands dashed about their fretboards with dexterity and speed, and on some compositions they used the body of their guitars as percussion instruments. Many audience members swayed with the Latin rhythms, and were transfixed by the romantic melodies that were played.  Although the pair played for two sets that lasted approximately 45 minutes each, the audience was ready to hear more.  Another hour or two of music by Duo Espanas would have been warmly welcomed!

In addition to pursuing active performance careers, Atanas and Espen enjoy being teachers of guitar in Bloomington.  Atanas is the Director of the pre-college guitar program at Indiana University and Espen leads the Latin American Popular Music Ensemble in the Jacobs School of Music. After such a wonderful performance in January perhaps Duo Espanas will do us all a favor and soon play again as a part of  Lund’s Concert Series.

Julane's Music Featured in Sundance Film

"Kansas Moon, The Last Hunt" is a film set in Texas and Kansas in the years 1871 and 1872. The film is based on an actual incident that took place between the grandfather of a Comanche Indian family and a small group of Pawnee. The story shows the conflict between the Native Americans and buffalo hunters, as well as the grandfather who has set out on a quest to avenge the killing of his family by the Pawnee. Julane's fiddling can be heard during a melancholy funeral scene in the film.  She plays a haunting rendition of an old Civil War tune called "Lorena."

The script and screen play of "Kansas Moon, The Last Hunt" was written by Bill Proctor, with adaptations and contributions by Historian Mike Tatham. Proctor's
production company, Perfect Hat Productions, specializes in historic films and documentaries. He has also worked on several major films as a Native American Advisor, stunt man and actor. The film was accepted to the Sundance Film Festival for 2012, and it will be premiered in Greenfield, Indiana in the spring of 2012.  To see rough cuts of the film, go to www.perfecthatproductions.com.
